Razer Arctech Slim & Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition Review

Razer is now making gaming cases with a claim that their Razer Arctech Slim and Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition will improve performance and battery life by keeping your device cool. You might think this might be a marketing fluff, but we actually think it works.

But between the Razer Arctech Slim and Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition, we think Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition is the better option due to the increased protection and handling. Keep reading if you want to know more about our Razer Arctech Slim and Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition review!

Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition [4.0]

At Mobile Reviews Eh!, we do tests and use the products in our everyday lives for days even weeks before doing an actual review. So when a company like Razer puts out the ludicrous claim that their case can cool your iPhone, we dropped a $100 on the Razer Arctech Slim and Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition, $25 bucks on a laser thermometer and a FLIR One Pro.

Razer Artech Slim Review

When it comes to design, the Razer Artech Slim is one of the thinner, slimmer cases in our ridiculous collection of cases. It’s one of the lighter cases as well, which might be useful from a gaming standpoint. However, when compared to similarly designed cases, the back of the Razer Arctech Slim is actually quite thick.

We’re guessing that extra thickness is needed to house the Thermaphene layer, which sits under a microfibre layer.

In general, the Razer Arctech Slim fits the iPhone well. It better be since the Razer Arctech Slim isn’t very bulky and doesn’t cover much of the iPhone. It’s quite slick, so it’s going to slide around a lot when it’s on the back. For the front of the case, the responsibility for stopping the case from sliding around belongs to your iPhone’s screen or screen protector.

The case doesn’t show excessive usage which is something we can’t say for the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition case. The texture on the Razer Arctech Slim is absolutely terrible as there isn’t any. But the venting holes on the case do feel neat.

In terms of iPhone protection, the Razer Arctech Slim isn’t going to offer your iPhone much. It’s a single layer case, with no edges for screen protection.

The only thing worth noting for protection is that the Thermapene layer is covered with a microfibre cloth layer, which will help with scratches.

Getting to your iPhone is a breeze in the Razer Arctech Slim, as nothing is covered. The case doesn’t actually extend past the bottom of your iPhone, so if you were to drop it accidentally while texting, the only thing stopping your iPhone from breaking is your iPhone.

Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition Review

The Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition looks more useful than the Razer Arctech Slim. We have no idea who would seriously consider the Razer Arctech Slim.

The design of the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition feels a lot like a Speck Presidio Grip Pro. There is a soft rubber coating on the case, which greatly helps with handling. In terms of size, the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition is much bulkier than the Razer Arctech Slim but that’s to be expected since the case will actually protect your iPhone.

From what we can tell, the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition is made only from PC and TPU, unlike cases from Mous, which are made from PC, TPU and TPE.

The Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition edition fits the iPhone well and won’t slide around easily. The only gripe we have with the black version of the case is the constant reminder of grease at the back. However, we do admit that the venting holes, coupled with the green microfibre cloth, make for a unique design. The texture on Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition is incredible and makes total sense for a gaming case.

In terms of protection, the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition is going to offer your iPhone a decent amount of drop protection. We have no issues dropping it from chest height, which is something we wouldn’t consider with the Razer Arctech Slim. The edges of the case are high enough to keep an iPhone’s screen with a protector off a flat surface, and the edges are rigid enough that we’re not worried about dust and debris getting to the case. Like the  Razer Arctech Slim, your iPhone’s back is coddled by microfibre so it will do a decent job of keeping your back scratch-free.

We had no issues getting to the iPhone. Buttons felt great, camera cutout is large with the edge being matted to minimize flash bounce backs and the port cutout is large enough to use in an iPhone stand.

Does Thermaphene work?

The unique feature of the Arctech cases is a layer of material called Thermaphene and we think it actually works.

The first few times of trying to get a good set of data, we spent a couple of hours filming using the FLIR One Pro while playing games. This method of data collection was tough to get a consistent idea of how the iPhone’s temperature was changing so we then set both iPhones in tripods. This method of data collection worked better but it put our body in an awkward position.

PROTIP: If you’re wondering what’s the easiest way to get your iPhone all hot and bothered, it is NOT gaming but rather recording hours upon hours of slow-mo video. The hottest our iPhone got while playing COD mobile was ~37 degrees, whereas our slo-mo video method was ~44.5 degrees.

For each of our tests, we would capture 7 minutes of slow-motion video and then record the temperature using our FLIR One Pro before taking off the case and doing another reading immediately after.

For the Razer Arctech Pro THS Edition, the iPhone was at 42.7 degrees right after case removal, which was around 1.5 degrees different. We did this test a couple of times and thought, “huh, it must work.” However, we didn’t stop there and also did the exact same test with cases from our Top 10 iPhone 11 Cases (Pro and Pro Max Included!). The table below is the result.

NOTE: The temperature on the cases below are recorded after removing the cases. For reference, an iPhone w/case on is a 42.7-degree Celsius while iPhone w/case off is 44.3-degree Celsius

The iPhone in the Razer cases were generally 1 degree C cooler than all the other cases. So Razer’s not trying to pull a fast one on us, which is a good thing.

But how much will a 1-degree change effect on your iPhone? Your iPhone isn’t like a custom gaming rig where each manufacturer of each part generally has no idea which part it’s going to be used with, so you had to tinker a lot of you wanted to maximize your rig.

But Apple’s in charge of every part of the iPhone. The tolerances for heat are known for every part, and they all work together. But the cooler you can keep the billions of transistors in your iPhone is probably a good thing.
