Nite Ize’s Steelie Connect Case System is a modular iPhone case system that allows you to easily mount your iPhone in any car without having to stick something permanently to your car. The case itself allows you to switch between the magnetic phone socket and a belt clip but doesn’t offer much protection for your iPhone.

Now we had a bit of difficulty rating this setup because the case itself, based on our scoring system, isn’t great at 3.5 Eh’s out of 5. The one thing my scoring system doesn’t really take into account is the added functionality of add ons or in this case, the entire Connect Case System. In our opinion, what the Steelie Connect Case brings to your iPhone outweighs the lower iPhone case score so we’re going to bump the score up to a 4.5 Eh’s out of 5.

Again, the actual case isn’t great, but the entire system is. Looking for an alternative? Check out our review on CaseCo’s Core 360 Car Mount!

Design – You get to choose how to use your iPhone?

Nite Ize Steelie Connect Case System Review - Slim but thick at the same timeIn terms of design, the case itself is quite slim if you don’t have any attachments on the back. However, with the magnetic mount on the back, it will double the thickness of your iPhone but since it’s just a bump on the back of the case, you really don’t notice it.

Switching between the magnetic mount and the belt clip is quite simple as all you have to do is pop the top of the case off to remove the attachment. Attaching the clip or the magnetic mount is as simple as sliding it in and hearing a click.

The back of the Steelie Connect Case is covered in this matte looking rubber that provides excellent texture so one handing your iPhone is quite easy.

Protection – Not much there…

Nite Ize Steelie Connect Case System Review - No Protection for your iPhone 6In terms of protection, this is where the case falls on its face. The most noticeable thing are the edges of the case are incredibly low so and will not keep the face of your iPhone off a flat surface if you have a glass screen protector installed.

For our Nite Ize Steelie Connect Case System Review, we felt the case didn’t provide much in terms of dust and debris as removing the attachments will expose your iPhone so stuff might get in between the case and your iPhone.

Functionality – One-Handed usage no-matter how small your hands are

Nite Ize Steelie Connect Case System Review - Great car iPhone 6 accessoryThe Steelie Case Connect System comes with a vent mount which mounts onto the vents of your car. We’re generally not big fans of actually sticking things to our car because once you stop using that accessory, you have a useless metal/plastic lump that just sits there.

What also doesn’t make sense to us is that if we’re using our iPhones as navigation devices, what’s the point of using it in your car. Generally, if you’re at home, you know where you need to go. Taking it from another point of view, if you’re on vacation, you definitely want to use your iPhone’s navigation tools but why would you spend money semi-permanantly put a iPhone car mount in a rental car? The Steelie Case Connect System easily solves this dilemma.

The Steelie Vent mount mounts into a vent (really?) Now we were a little cautious about the mounting system since car vents don’t really look that strong but they were. The entire setup didn’t fall apart after several driving expeditions though one of the drawbacks of mounting it on the vent is that you lose that vent in terms of air flow.

How well does the vent mount fare with a heavier device? We mounted an iPhone 6 Plus in a Spigen Tough Armor FX and it held up pretty well. We have to say that if you’re adding a Steelie mount to the back of the case, keep it close enough to the center so that you can use the iPhone in landscape.

Being able to remove the Steelie Vent mount is one of the best features that we discovered in our Nite Ize Steelie Connect Case System Review. As a side benefit, the Vent mount can also double as a stand for your iPhone in a pinch.

Now onto another side benefit and this just deals with having a magnet on the back of your iPhone is that you end being able to put it onto different places. This may not seem like a big deal but we’ve mounted the case at the gym, on Aaron’s hood fan and a paper towel holder. Again, the case itself isn’t great in terms of protection but the functionality it affords you outweighs that fact.
