If you love mixed-material cases, this one’s going to catch your eye. Last year, Benks stumbled a bit, but honestly, they’ve come back swinging for 2025. It’s thin, it looks premium, and those metal buttons with the Kevlar wrap are a chef’s kiss. BUT the real question is simple: can something this light actually protect your iPhone?

Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:

  • Buy the case ourselves
  • Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
    • Weight
    • Size
    • Back rigidity
    • Corner/Back Thickness
    • Corner compression
  • Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
    • Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
    • Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
  • Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
    • Average peak deceleration
    • Average decay rate
    • Average impulse
    • Average max rotation
    • Average angular displacement
    • Average settling time
  • After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.

We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

Benks really turned things around this year. The case looks simple, but the materials are the star: TPU wrapped with actual aramid fiber around the edge, a mostly-TPU bottom, and a floating back that doesn’t touch the iPhone. We haven’t seen this design in a while, and it helps with shock suspension later in testing. The metallic camera ring stands out and makes the case look more expensive than it is. Using it feels like using nothing at all. It adds just 37g and bumps bulk by 47%, which is wild compared to something like the Pelican Shield, which is basically double everything.

On paper, it doesn’t look promising. The corners are only 1.5mm thick, the back panel is 1.3mm, and the phone doesn’t even touch the rear of the case. But rigidity is where things get interesting. It took 46N to bend the case 8mm, which makes it 61% stiffer than average. Combined with the air cavity behind the phone and the Kevlar wrap, this design ends up performing way better than it looks. The floating back effectively acts like a tiny suspension system, helping redistribute impact rather than letting it pass straight into the phone.

In the hand, the case is fairly slick, though the back texture helps a little. The aramid fiber sides sadly don’t have the same traction, which holds this case back from being great in the grip department. Buttons are metallic, flow-through, and sit in raised surrounds that make them easier to find. The camera button is covered and slightly raised as well, and the port cutout is roomy enough for even thick cables, though the sharp bottom edges might annoy your pinky over time. Screen access is excellent because the case edges are so low, which feels great for swipes but doesn’t help much for protection. MagSafe performance is weak at 8.2N pull and 8.5N push which is around 16% below the average across all the cases we’ve tested, and even low compared to Apple’s own cases.

Corner drops are where this case absolutely shines. At 3ft, our iPhone logged just 7.2G, which is 32% above average for corner impacts. Rotation rate was 40% lower, settling was only 10% higher, and total force was 20% below average. For something this slim, that’s wild. The Kevlar helps the shock travel and deform properly, and the floating back creates a suspension effect during impact. If you’re getting an aramid fiber or carbon-fiber case, make sure the material wraps the edge. The back-only plates you see everywhere don’t do much in real drops.

Face-first drops, though? Sad. The case failed due to build tolerances. The top edge doesn’t sit tight, you can literally see more of the iPhone at the top of the case, and combined with shallow lips, any shift during impact leads to instant screen contact. If you’re treating this like a tempered glass review and prioritizing pure screen survival, this isn’t the setup that inspires confidence. Camera-lump drops were surprisingly fine thanks to the integrated metallic ring, with initial impact 12% lower, settling 22% below average, and overall force basically average.

Value

This case feels premium and performs far better than expected for corner drops, especially for its weight class. You’re getting a thin mixed-material design with great drop data on the corners, but you’re paying for it with weaker face-first protection. If you love the look and feel, we’d absolutely pair it with a good screen protector for iPhone so the case handles the corners while the glass takes the hit on the front.

Verdict

In our hunt for the best iPhone cases of 2025, anything that fails the 3ft test is usually out of the running. But this Benks Aramid Fiber Case is an exception. It’s extremely light, looks great, and crushes corner-drop performance in a way most thin cases can’t. It’s held back by the loose top and shallow edges, so we wouldn’t trust it alone for repeated face-first impacts, but honestly? We’d still use it, we’d just keep a spare tempered glass ready. If you’re okay treating your screen protector like the consumable part of the setup, this thin mixed-material case can still make a lot of sense.
