We’ve been testing fifty iPhone cases this year to figure out which five actually deserve a spot on your phone. And honestly, the dbrand Ghost was one we hoped would surprise us. It looks clean, it’s lightweight, and it has that signature dbrand design language. But after over thirty drops, a handful of handling tests, and a frustrating build quality issue, this case had a habit of being a “ghost” that disappears right when it mattered most.

Our goal is to find out what cases are actually best for your iPhone. We don’t base our reviews on any of the marketing a company wants you to believe. We’re reviewers, not influencers.
Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:
- Buy the case ourselves
- Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
- Weight
- Size
- Back rigidity
- Corner/Back Thickness
- Corner compression
- Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
- Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
- Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
- Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
- Average peak deceleration
- Average decay rate
- Average impulse
- Average max rotation
- Average angular displacement
- Average settling time
- After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.
We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

This isn’t your typical clear case. The Ghost uses a vacuum-formed polycarbonate back paired with a TPU bumper, though only the back is clear. The bumper has vertical hatching along the entire perimeter for grip, oversized corners, and even a raised rear lip to keep the glossy back off surfaces. Weight lands at 46g, basically average, and it only bumps overall bulk by around 51%, which feels totally manageable.

In the hand, the Ghost feels fine, but a step below the dbrand Tank. The edge hatching does help offset the slick PC back. The integrated buttons are larger than average and not mushy, but the camera control button is genuinely bad. It is loose, flush with the frame, and prone to mis-clicks. Screen access is amazing thanks to the shallow edge design, and even the pinky-ledge is comfortable. The one downside: the port cutout won’t fit thicker cables. For MagSafe, it takes 9.8N to pull off accessories and 11.1N to push, which sits right at the average 6% deviation.

The protective build is a mixed bag. The back plate measures 1.9mm, corners hit around 3mm, and rigidity is noticeably low at 19.4N to bend 8mm which is 30% below average. During corner drops, the Ghost had impressively low rotation (61% better) and a lower-than-average initial impact, yet the case “bounced” hard, causing the total force to land around average. It settles quickly, but that energy spike during the rebound is what hurts protection.
Face-first drops are where things fell apart. Our unit had a manufacturing flaw: one corner didn’t fully wrap the phone, letting the screen protector extend past the case edge. The other three corners were fine, but all it takes is one weak point. A case shouldn’t fail because of uneven molding yet here we are.
The surprising upside? Camera-lens drops. Since the entire back is a single PC slab with no seams, the Ghost performed far better than expected: 46% better initial impact, average settling, and 17% better total force. A rare win for a case built this way.
Value
Here’s the deal: even if the Ghost looked the part, the inconsistent build quality and flawed button design hold it back. When you’re paying a premium for a minimalistic case, you expect at least reliable molding and buttons that don’t misfire. Other clear cases in this price range simply deliver more confidence.
Verdict
Would we use the dbrand Ghost if we weren’t reviewers? Honestly, no. Between the loose corner on our unit, the frustrating camera control button, and the odd bounce behavior during drops, it’s just not something we’d trust long-term. Ghost needs better consistency before we’d recommend it for protecting an iPhone in 2025.
