Evutec Karbon SI Series Review – The best case for the SIM-card swapper?

Today we’re going to do a review on the Carbon Osprey SI by Evutec. We’ve had this case for over a year and we’re a big fans of it. The handling of the case coupled with the ease of sim card removal makes the Evutec Karbon SI an attractive case for the office dweller.

For our Evutec Karbon SI Series review, we’ve given the Evutec Karbon SI a score of 4.4 Eh’s out of 5. This is one of the higher rated iPhone cases and ranks up there with the Thule Atmos X4, Spigen Neo Hybrid Tech and Rhinoshield Playproof. Design – Thin because of the DuPont Kevlar?

Evutec Karbon SI iPhone case - DuPont Kevlar

For design, the materials used in the case are supposedly quite unique. The case is made from Kevlar which reminds of bulletproof vests so this Evutec case has to be really tough right? Most of the webpage for the Karbon is dedicated to the process of gathering, weaving, dipping, forming and cutting of the kevlar case. The cherry on top of this marketing fluff sundae? The woven material is 5x times stronger than steel at the same weight.

If we bought into the marketing fluff, we would have to believe that this is the toughest ever right? Ironically, it’s not drop-rated…

Now we really no way of testing how tough the kevlar fibres but are but we can say that the 5x EvuTouch coating that they use makes the back of the case provides the case with great “grippiness”. The “grippiness” feature is what makes this case one of our favourites. The case doesn’t add a lot of bulk to the iPhone and can be considered as a minimalist case though it’s not as slim as the ExPro by OnPro.

The EvuTouch coating is fairly scratch resistant as keys don’t really do much to the back as the case. On top of Aaron’s usage, the Karbon SI spent several weeks in Aaron’s wife’s purse and showed no signs of excessive wear. We will note that a drop from chest height will scuff up the coating but this is the general case for all slim cases.

Through all the kevlar weaving, forming and cutting, the Karbon SI is one of the only cases that has a cutout for the sim-tray which is nice for people who have to deal with multiple sim cards.

Protection – Not drop-rated but can take a hit

In terms of protection, as we mentioned earlier, the Karbon SI isn’t drop-rated though like most slim cases, it will protect your iPhone from a chest height drop. The edges of the case will provide a bit of clearance for your iPhone, even with a glass screen protector. The Karbon SI fits tightly around the iPhone so dust/debris shouldn’t be an issue.

Functionality – The only case we’ve reviewed with sim card access

In terms of accessing your iPhone, the Karbon SI doesn’t get in the way which is nice. There are no issues with screen usability, button access and as mentioned above, this case is better than most in terms of access because of the sim-tray cutout.

Again, for our Evutec Karbon SI Series Review, we gave this iPhone 6 case a score of 4.4 Eh’s out of 5. Have questions? Please ask them on our Google+ page or our Facebook page or our About Us page.

Hi, Aaron – A couple of details may have changed since you first got the case. The SI is definitely drop-rated to four feet–the website boasts a “MIL-STD-810” certification. Also, Evutec’s photos don’t seem to indicate a SIM card cutout. I suspect you’re reviewing an older version.

    Thanks!

Hi, so I am going to buy the Evutec Karbon SI for my iPhone 6s and was wondering what screen protector your recommended to go along with this case? Thanks and have a great day.

Aaron, love your reviews. I’m thinking about this case but I use a Clingo-type mount in my car that “grips” the back of the phone. Those mounts don’t work with silicone or soft cases, or with any case that can be pried off of the phone easily. It looks from your video like this case is soft and pliable. Is that the case (in which case I should probably stay away)?

It’s not too pliable but the case has a soft-rubber coating on it that might not work.
