The Flolab Surtect has one big thing going for it: it feels like a case built the old-school way, before brands started shaving protection to protect margins. We’ve tested a lot of cases this year and honestly, the Surtect stands out because it prioritizes how an iPhone actually behaves when it hits the ground.
How We Test

Our goal is to find out what cases are actually best for your iPhone. We don’t base our reviews on any of the marketing a company wants you to believe. We’re reviewers, not influencers.
Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:
- Buy the case ourselves
- Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
- Weight
- Size
- Back rigidity
- Corner/Back Thickness
- Corner compression
- Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
- Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
- Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
- Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
- Average peak deceleration
- Average decay rate
- Average impulse
- Average max rotation
- Average angular displacement
- Average settling time
- After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.
We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

The Surtect is a relatively new case, only a couple of years old, but it doesn’t feel inexperienced. It’s a triple-layer design using TPU, TPE, and a rigid PC back, and that combination is used thoughtfully. You can swap out the camera lip and buttons, which is a nice touch, and color options are limited but clean black or white, paired with either a clear or frosted back. The white frosted version looks great, though we did notice it can pick up a bit of blue dye from denim.
There are a lot of small quality-of-life details here. Tiny feet on the back reduce wear when you set the phone down, and there’s a subtle taper at the top and bottom that helps with screen protection. The case adds 46 grams, which is right around average, and increases overall bulk by 59%. That weight-to-bulk ratio is actually pretty solid, especially considering how much protection is built in.

In the hand, grip is okay but not outstanding. The TPU has a slight finish to it, but it’s not aggressive enough to fully lock into your palm. Every now and then, it feels like it might slip if you’re not paying attention. The buttons, however, are well done. They’re plastic flow-through buttons that feel smooth, and the contrast when you run your fingers across them is genuinely nice.
The camera control button is covered and sits almost flush, but the surrounding metal ring sticks out just enough that you can find it without looking. Screen access is solid thanks to the gradual slope of the edges, though the port cutout while large enough for even our thickest cables does have a noticeable edge that can dig into your pinky during one-handed use. MagSafe performance is strong, taking 10.6N to pull and push accessories off, which is about 8% above average and a clear improvement over last year’s version.

This is where the Surtect really earns its name. The back is 1.9mm thick, corners measure 2.3mm, and the edges are completely filled with TPE. This is the kind of construction we used to see from brands like Mous before they started limiting reinforcement to just the corners. The case is also stiffer than average, taking 37N to bend 8mm, and the corners require about 35N to remove which is well above the 25N average.
In corner drops, our iPhone logged just 7G’s, which is 32% below average, with a rotation rate 18% lower than normal. More importantly, the case settles 78% faster than average, meaning less secondary movement and less cumulative force. Overall drop force ends up 15% lower than average, and that’s exactly what you want to see. Face-first drops were similarly controlled, with initial impact and total force both coming in 17% better than average, even if the settling rate was a bit slower due to TPU doing most of the work.
Camera-lump drops are especially interesting because the camera lip is removable and snaps into the rigid PC back. Despite that rigidity, the combination of TPU and TPE around the edges does its job. Initial impact was 49% better than average, overall force was 21% lower, and while the settling rate was slower, the net result is still far safer than most cases we’ve tested.
Value
When you look at what the Surtect delivers (serious protection, modular components, and well-thought-out construction) the value makes sense. It’s not trying to be flashy or ultra-thin, and that’s the point. You’re paying for materials and engineering that actually show up in real-world drop data, not marketing fluff.
Verdict
So would we buy this if we weren’t reviewers? Yeah, absolutely. Out of 50 cases tested, the Flolab Surtect is one of the best-performing protective cases we’ve seen. It’s not perfect, but when it comes to what actually matters which is keeping your iPhone safe when things go wrong, it delivers in a big way.
