Hitcase Pro Review - iPhone 6 - Exterior Car Mount

HitCase Pro Review – Where can you put it?

Today we’re going to review the HitCase Pro. This type of iPhone accessory, in our mind, is probably the number reason why iPhones are better than any Android device out there because you can do so much more with it.

This is a tough case that is shockproof up to 6.6 ft and waterproof up to 33 ft. It generally offers decent access to your iPhone if you need it but we wouldn’t go and use this case on a day-to-day basis. The lens on the HitCase Pro is absolutely awesome and the entire iPhone case setup is compatible with other GoPro accessories which is pretty awesome.

For this HitCase Pro review for the iPhone 6, we’ve given it a score of 3.4 Eh’s out of 5. Now this is a really low score but it doesn’t match the excitement we actually have for this review because that’s how it fares as a case. No where in our scoring system do we have “marks for letting you record all the awesome things in your life in wide-angle HD” because if we did, the score would be closer to 5. If you’re looking for the iPhone 5 version of the HitCase, go here!

Design – Its a big case

Hitcase Pro Review - iPhone 6 - Interior Liner

In terms of design, this is a big case. There is nothing tiny about it especially if you get the super wide angle lens. This is not an iPhone case that you would keep in any pocket easily due to its size and between the iPhone 5 and 6 versions of the HitCase, we actually like the general design of the 5 as the installation on the 6 version is a little harder to deal with. The latches on the corners of the case are quite small and unlocking the case using the included Hitcase coin scratches the case a bit.

The lenses on the Hitcase Pro are removable which as nice. The Hitcase we have for the iPhone 5 version was an older one so the lens was attached to the case so if you scratch it, you have to send to HitCase to have it replaced. This slight change in design is pretty great in our opinion.

Protection – 33ft water protection?

Hitcase Pro Review - iPhone 6 - Rain Test

In terms of protection, the Hitcase Pro for the iPhone 6, like its predecessor, is drop rated to 6.6 Ft and waterproof up to 33ft. Currently, this is the king of the waterproof iPhone 6 cases as the next closest is the Catalyst Waterproof at 16 ft. For the drop protection, we haven’t dropped it yet as Aaron is about to embark on a snorkelling adventure so having a generally pristine Hitcase Pro is needed. We’ll drop it after.

We will note that for the iPhone to come flying out, the impact will need to pop the corner latches and the attachment points along the sides of the case. The case fits tightly together as trying to pry the case apart is only done using a coin (HitCase does include a small custom tool to do so) so the iPhone is definitely going to be well protected.

In terms of water protection, again, haven’t taken it up to 33 ft (but check back later for the waterproof test). We have done the watertest for the HitCase in Aaron’s sink and as you saw in the video, the Hitcase has survived sitting rain while on a moving car and in a heavy summer shower.

We did notice condensation around the button areas of the case but this shouldn’t be a problem as the waterproofing comes from the liner and the back of the case, not the liner and hard outer shell.

Functionality – iPhone functionality suffers a little bit

Hitcase Pro Review - iPhone 6 - Super Wide Lens

Accessing your iPhone isn’t great especially when compared to slim cases and most other tough cases but it allows you to access everything that you need to while being in extreme situations. The only button that you won’t be able to access is the mute switch which isn’t a deal breaker since we don’t recommend getting the Hitcase as a day-to-day case. We have to give props to Hitcase as other action camera case manufacturers like Armor-X don’t even allow access to the buttons on your iPhone.

The cutout for the lightning port fits only Apple sized lighting connectors, the headphone jacks will allow you to use slightly larger than average jacks and the camera flash are covered up completely. Sound coming from the iPhone inside the Hitcase generally isn’t great as the sound coming from the ear piece speaker is muted slightly and sound coming from the main speakers gets quite muted. Call quality, like every other waterproof case that we’ve reviewed, makes it sound like you are in a box.

Screen functionality isn’t great though the screen protector is large enough for you to access any part of the iPhone. We did find a small gap in the corner of testing iPhone though we’re not sure if its because of the case or if the iPhone is slightly bent. Viewablity of the screen is a little better than other screen protectors as their isn’t any additional glare but you’ll encounter minor rainbowing issues and the screen protector tends to get scratched up a lot.

The camera portion of the case is pretty awesome. The wide angle lenses definitely widens the field of view of your iPhone’s camera. The lens, as we said earlier is removable and you can get different lenses to suit whatever you’re planning on filming.

Now all of this wouldn’t really matter unless you could mount the Hitcase easily. One of the best parts about this case is that it will fit other GoPro accessories (Optrix doesn’t do that). So if you’ve collected lots of GoPro accessories over the years and don’t want to spend an extra $500 dollars on a new Hero, get the HitCase. Between the two, its not as tough and won’t let you go down into the water as far but will let you do 80% of everything you’d do with the GoPro.

If you want to see how we’ve mounted our Hitcase for this review, check out the end of our review video.

Again, we gave this case a score of 3.4 Eh’s out of 5. If you’re looking for a decent way to capture unique footage during all of your extreme escapades, consider getting the Hitcase Pro for the iPhone 6. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Hey, Aaron! I have my hitcase (and have had it for 2 weeks now) and I noticed the issue with the scratching too. I called them and they said there was a very early batch that had major issues with it, but only a few phones, you should give them a call and see if they’ll send you a new shock seal, that’s what they did for me 😀

Have you tried using the floater of the GoPro, how was it? If not, can you give it a try?? 🙂 Thanks a lot, I love the way how you make your reviews (Y)
