LifeProof Nuud Review for the iPhone 5S

“The only waterproof and shockproof case that gives you the au-naturel feel of your iPhone’s touchscreen”

If you’re looking for a great day-to-day case that provides shock and water protection but still allows you to use your iPhones touchscreen, the LifeProof Nuud for the iPhone 5S is going to be the case for you.

The best part of this case is the ability to use your iPhone without the screen protector while keeping the phone safe from water and drops. The worst part of this case is that your screen still might suffer damage if it gets dropped face first in a gravel parking lot. LifeProof does include an optional-installable screen protector but then your iPhone isn’t “Nuud” anymore.

For the LifeProof Nuud review, we’ve included a table that provides all the details of how we’ve rated the Nuud.It can be found in the “Full Score Breakdown” toggle.

[toggle title=”Full Score Breakdown”][go_pricing id=”ip5s_nuud”][/toggle]

[toggle title=”Design – You’ll forget that there’s a case on your iPhone”]This is a well designed iPhone case. It’s easy to install and doesn’t add a lot of weight and bulk to the case. In terms of build quality, the case holds up well to drops and has a good mix of hard plastic and rubber which allows you to move in and out of pockets easily[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Protection – Don’t worry about it, just live your life”]The LifeProof Nuud is waterproof up to 6.6 ft/3m for 1 hour and is shockproof up to 6.6 ft as well. We had a bit of fun seeing if LifeProof’s claims were true as we slapped the Nuud (with an iPhone in it) across a concrete floor to test its shock protection and tried drowning the case with beer. There were no problems with the case.

In terms of screen protection, the LifeProof Nuud doesn’t have a screen protector. LifeProof does include an optional screen-protector that you can install and you’re able to install other screen protectors as well though you won’t be able to certify that the case is still waterproof[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Functionality – Being Nuud is a thing of beauty”] This is one of the best cases for access to your iPhone. The lack of a screen protector means that you will not suffer from any additional glare or rain bowing effects. The edges of the LifeProof Nuud are far enough from the touchscreen that you can easily access to the swipe menus of iOS 7. This was not the case for the LifeProof Nuud for the iPhone 5.

The membrane on the TouchID sensor works fairly well as the iPhone case “guides” your finger toward. Unlike the Fre, where the Touch ID membrane sits almost flush on the screen.[/toggle]

Can you mount this case to a helmet using gopro accessories, or any other accessories?

I’m not sure if LifeProof has those accessories.

    Hi,

Great review of the Lifeproof Nuud.

Could you tell me a bit more about the speakerphone and how the waterproofing has affect the speakers and the mic?

If possible, could you do a demonstration, so that I could actually get a feel for it. I would also suggest that you when you do a video review, you should also include the sound comparison for the mic and speak phone.

Waiting for my iPhone 6 plus to arrive and shopping for a good case for the time being. I know the life proof does not have a nuud case out for the iPhone 6+ yet, but the 5s case should give me an idea of what the new case would be like for the iPhone 6+.

    Thanks a lot

    Andrew

For the Nuud, the sound coming from the ear piece speaker has a bit of “static” or “popping” when the volume is set to max. It disappears if you lower the volume.

In terms of sound coming from the speakers, the Nuud actually amplifies the sound coming from the iPhone. We do take into account the sound for the videos but sometimes I forget to mention it.

Here’s a video that compares speakers between the Incipio Atlas ID, LifeProof Fre/Nuud and Otterbox Preserver: http://youtu.be/M_oqBWk6XbQ

Thanks for the link and clarifying the sound issue.

Looks like the life proof nuud is the one for me if they make it like the 5S model.

        Keep up the good work.

LifeProof says that it doesn’t support 3rd Party Screen protectors so you’re taken a risk using the Nuud with your current screen protector. With that being said, I don’t think it would be much of a problem since Zagg protectors are quite thin.

In addition to that, LifeProof does include a screen protector with the Nuud so that might solve your problem.

Can you put a 0.33mm tempered glass screen protector on this case?

LifeProof’s instructions usually tell you to remove all films and screen protectors before using their cases.

Does the included third party screen protector jeopardize the waterproof of the Nuud?
