Is your heart set on getting an Otterbox case for your iPhone 6? Or are you reading this article while in a big box store and all you have in front of you are Otterbox cases? Well, we can definitely help you decide which case to get. Looking for other iPhone 6 cases? Check out our comparison tool: http://www.mobilereviews-eh.ca/top-iphone-6-case-comparisons/

Right off the bat, we’d recommend the Otterbox Symmetry out of these three cases. It’s light, well built and offers decent protection if you can pair it with a screen protector. The second case, and it will cost twice as much as the Symmetry is the Otterbox Defender. This case will add quite a bit of bulk and weight to your case but be warned, it may damage your iPHone 6 if you’re not diligent in keeping it clean.

Last and definitely the least is the Otterbox Commuter. We are hopeful that Otterbox is making this case better because the version we got right at the iPhone 6 launch suffered from really bad build quality. Like the Defender, if you’re not diligent in keeping your case clean, your iPhone 6 is going to suffer a bit of damage.

Pretty simple right? It sort of is. Keep reading if you want more details.

  • Price:

    $39.90 USD

  • Pros:

    - One of the first cases available for the iPhone 6
    - Provides 2 layers of protection

  • Cons:

    - The Otterbox Commuter does not fit together well. Gaps between the rubber sleeve and plastic shell
    - Rubber sleeve sits loosely on the iPhone
    - Included screen protector will easily peel from the rounded corners of the iPhone 6

  • Potential Problems:

    - Rubber sleeve on the Otterbox Commuter is going to stretch out even more over time which will allow dust to get between the case and your iPhone
    - Plugs at the bottom of the sleeve may eventually fall off

  • DESIGN

  • Weight/Bulk/Install (3/5):

    - Doubles the thickness of your iPhone 6
    - Will add approx. 1/4 inch around the entire iPhone
    - Flaps at the bottom require a bit of fidgeting to align

  • Build Quality (2.75/5):

    - Case does not fit well together. Substantial gaps between the rubber sleeve and the plastic casing
    - Cut outs at the bottom of the Commuter look carelessly cut - Sleeve does not fit the iPhone 6 well

  • PROTECTION

  • General Protection (2/5):

    - The Otterbox Commuter does provide 2 layers of protection for your iPhone 6
    - Loose rubber sleeves means dust/debris will get into the case which will scratch your iPhone 6
    - Case isn't drop rated but Otterbox says it will protect your iPhone from drops - Edges of the case extend approx. 1/4 past the screen providing a bit of screen protection

  • FUNCTIONALITY

  • iPhone Functionality (4.5/5):

    - Able to access all buttons on the iPhone 6
    - Confusing headphone jack cover (not cut properly)
    - Able to use larger headphone jacks as the bumper along the bottom is quite flexible

  • Screen Functionality (5/5):

    - The Otterbox Commuter does not get in the way of viewing/accessing your iPhone's touchscreen

  • Price:

    $39.90 USD

  • Pros:

    - Fits the iPhone 6 fairly well
    - Much better than the Otterbox Commuter

  • Cons:

    - Thick for being a slim case
    - Rubber around buttons is really compressible
    - Will easily slide off a table as the back of the case isn't rubbery

  • Potential Problems:

    - None that we can think of

  • DESIGN

  • Weight/Bulk/Install (3/5):

    - Doubles the thickness of your iPhone 6
    - Will add approx. 1/4 inch around the entire iPhone
    - Makes the iPhone 6 noticeably heavier

  • Build Quality (3.5/5):

    - The Otterbox Symmetry fits well together
    - the rubber around the buttons tends to move quite a bit when pressed
    - The slickness of the back makes the iPhone 6 feel less stable when used with one hand

  • PROTECTION

  • General Protection (3/5):

    - Will not protect your iPhone 6 from dust
    - Case isn't drop rated but Otterbox says it will protect your iPhone from drops
    - Edges of the case extend approx. 1/8 past the screen providing a bit of screen protection

  • FUNCTIONALITY

  • iPhone Functionality (5/5):

    - Able to access all buttons on the iPhone 6
    - Able to use larger headphone jacks as the bumper along the bottom is quite flexible
    - Edges of the case may peel away your screen protector

  • Screen Functionality (5/5):

    - The Otterbox Symmetry does not get in the way of viewing/accessing your iPhone's touchscreen

Otterbox Defender

Full Review
Video Review
  • Price:

    $59.95

  • Pros:

    - Offers decent access to your iPhone 6
    - Offers better protection than the Otterbox Symmetry and Commuter
    - Feels well-built (*see potential problems)

  • Cons:

    - Dust/Debris protection isn't great
    - Buttons on iPhone 6 are hard to get at
    - Slightly more complicated to install than other cases
    - Adds quite a bit of bulk to the iPhone 6

  • Potential Problems:

    - Rubber covering may stretch over time. We've seen this happen on our iPad mini and iPhone 5/5S cases
    - No seals/membranes around the camera areas mean that dust/debris can be trapped between the case and iPhone resulting in a little bit of damage

  • DESIGN

  • Weight/Bulk (3/5):

    - Otterbox Defender will more than double the thickness of your iPhone 6

  • Build Quality (5/5):

    - The materials of the Defender do feel top notch
    - The rubbered shell reduces the chance that the case is going to slip out of your hand - Screen protector doesn't get scratched up from general usage
    - The case feels well built BUT Defenders are known to stretch out over time - Installation of the case is much more difficult when compared to the Commuter and Symmetry

  • PROTECTION

  • General Protection (4/5):

    - Will protect your iPhone 6 from dust/debris better than the Symmetry and Commuter but it is still a good idea to clean out the case every once in a while
    - Case isn't drop rated but Otterbox says it will protect your iPhone from drops. The Defender protected our iPhone 6 from a 40ft though it still bent
    - Screen protector provides excellent protection

  • FUNCTIONALITY

  • iPhone Functionality (4/5):

    - Power and volume buttons are difficult to get to
    - Easy access to hardware ports
    - Sound is not effected by the Otterbox Defender
    - Touch ID membrane works
    - No noticeable iPhone signal loss

  • Screen Usability (3.5/5):

    - A small gap between the screen protector and touchscreen
    - Reduces the sensitivity of the screen a little bit
    - Plastic edge around the Touch ID sensor may get in the way of accessing your control panel
    - The Defender's screen protector produces a bit of glare

Design – Slim or Rugged, none of these cases are sleek like the iPhone 6

Otterbox Defender Vs Symmetry Vs Commuter - iPhone 6 ComparisonsBetween these three cases, the Defender is the thickest case followed by the Symmetry and Commuter. Out of these three cases, the Commuter handles the best only because the edges of the case are rounded like the iPhone 6. The Symmetry’s edge make a bit more difficult to use with one hand.

The quality of materials on the Symmetry are a notch above the Defender and the Commuter. The rubber sleeve on the Commuter stretches out quite a bit so dust and debris can easily fall between the case and the iPhone. The Defender will suffer in a similar manner as previous generations of the Defenders have as the rubber shell will slowly stretch out overtime, the port covers might fall/get torn off easily and there design doesn’t prevent dust/debris from entering the case cavity.

Protection – The Otterbox Defender is a tough case…if you clean it.

In terms of protection, Otterbox doesn’t rate any of these cases to a specific Mil-Spec which is shame since they claim that they are tough cases but we can’t really say. Out of the three cases, the only case that we’ve tested in terms of drop protection is the Otterbox Defender. We’re giving Otterbox the benefit of the doubt by saying it will protect your iPhone from 6.6 ft drops but in our drop test, we threw in 40 ft in the air. The iPhone 6 is fine though a little bent.

In terms of water and dust protection, none of the cases are waterproof and only the Commuter and Defender offer dust protection but the poor design and build quality of these cases negates their dust protection in our opinion.

For screen protection, the only two Otterbox cases that come with screen protectors are the Commuter and Defender. The Commuter is sticky screen protector where the Defender is built into the case. We will note that during our 40 ft drop of the Defender, the iPHone 6 landed screen first on a gravel parking lot and the iPhone 6 screen did not shatter.

Functionality – The case that has the worse built quality is the one that offers the best iPhone functionality

In our Otterbox Defender vs Commuter vs Symmetry comparison, we’re going to tell you that the case we don’t recommend is the case that provides the easiest access to your iPhone. The Symmetry and Defender had volume and power buttons that were a little more difficult to use. Every one of the cases allows you to access your hardware ports easily and use third party cables and headphones with the your iPhone 6.

Will using an OtterBox film screen protector for the iPhone 6+ help reduce the gap behind the OtterBox Defender screen protector?
