Oh man, how the mighty have fallen. The Otterbox Symmetry used to be one of those go-to cases that perfectly balanced protection and polish. But in 2025? It’s not even close. We’re testing 50 iPhone cases to find the best five, and this one might be the biggest disappointment so far. We’re not sponsored, and every case we drop gets tested in real conditions from corner drops, face-first drops, camera hits, the whole deal. So when we say the Symmetry’s lost its edge, it’s not opinion. It’s data.

Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:
- Buy the case ourselves
- Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
- Weight
- Size
- Back rigidity
- Corner/Back Thickness
- Corner compression
- Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
- Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
- Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
- Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
- Average peak deceleration
- Average decay rate
- Average impulse
- Average max rotation
- Average angular displacement
- Average settling time
- After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.
We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

We used to like the Symmetry. The older models had this great TPU and polycarbonate blend that made sense: slick, solid, and protective. But this clear Symmetry feels like Otterbox stopped trying. It’s built like every other cheap clear case: hard PC back, TPU edges, and no unique features to justify its price. Other brands use raised feet to prevent scratches on the back; Otterbox just lets the edge scrape instead.
And here’s the kicker, it’s missing the lower MagSafe array entirely. It’s like they forgot half the magnet ring. That alone makes it incompatible with most MagSafe grips and mounts. The only small win? It’s light. At 37 g, it’s below the 50 g average, and bulk increase is just 49%. But honestly, that’s where the good news ends.

Handling this case feels average at best. The TPU edge has a faintly rubberized texture, but it’s too slick for confident one-handed use. The buttons, though, are excellent. It’s crisp, responsive, and better than most budget cases. Camera shortcut access is a mixed bag: covered this time, unlike the Defender’s open layout. The Lightning port cutout? Sharp edges, small opening, and completely incompatible with heavier-duty USB-C cables. Pinky support? Painful.
MagSafe performance is embarrassing. Pull strength doesn’t even register on our force meter (minimum 5 N). Push strength hit 6.5 N which is roughly 50% weaker than the average case. Without the lower magnet array, this case can’t hold onto a grip, battery pack, or even a car mount securely. Maybe a wallet, but that’s pushing it. Literally.

The numbers are weirdly good but misleading. Corner drops averaged 8.4 g, which is 20% lower than average. That’s solid. But rotation was up by 27%, meaning the phone spins more violently before settling. Overall impact force was still 20% lower, but that doesn’t help when the MagSafe accessories themselves make the phone unstable.
Face-first drops? Complete failure. The top edge is too thin, so the screen ends up kissing the pavement. Ironically, the corners take 50% more force to pop off than most cases. The camera bump area, meanwhile, lands with average impact and 11% better settling, but total force was 11% higher. So you gain a little stability and lose actual protection.
Value
At this price, Otterbox should be embarrassed. You’re paying a premium for a name that no longer delivers. The Symmetry offers less MagSafe strength than an ESR case, weaker protection than some $15 budget models, and a build that feels unfinished. Lightweight doesn’t make up for poor engineering and design shortcuts. If you’re after a premium case, there are better and cheaper options everywhere.
Verdict
Would we buy this case if we weren’t reviewers? Not a chance. Not even if it was on sale. Not even if it was free. The Otterbox Symmetry for iPhone is a ghost of its former self. It’s flimsy, slippery, and underperforming across the board. Once a household name in protection, now it’s barely average. Out of the 50 cases we’ve tested so far, this one lands near the bottom. How the mighty have fallen, indeed.
