We didn’t have high hopes for the Ridge Aramid Case when we first picked it up. But after a couple of tests, it surprised us in a few ways. Then came one major red flag that flipped our opinion yet again.

How We Test

Our goal is to find out what cases are actually best for your iPhone. We don’t base our reviews on any of the marketing a company wants you to believe. We’re reviewers, not influencers.

Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:

  • Buy the case ourselves
  • Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
    • Weight
    • Size
    • Back rigidity
    • Corner/Back Thickness
    • Corner compression
  • Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
    • Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
    • Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
  • Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
    • Average peak deceleration
    • Average decay rate
    • Average impulse
    • Average max rotation
    • Average angular displacement
    • Average settling time
  • After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.

We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

The Ridge Aramid Case looks and feels like your typical carbon fiber-style shell. It’s thin, minimal, and a bit slick. Ridge actually glues real aramid fiber onto the case and even lines the interior with it, which most brands don’t bother doing. It weighs just 35 grams and only makes your iPhone feel about 41% larger. That’s tiny for a “protective” case.

The matte finish feels good out of the box, but expect it to get greasier over time. Button access is solid with metallic flow-through buttons that have a rounded profile and raised lip, adding a subtle but distinct tactile feel. The port cutout is wide and thankfully not sharp, which is a small but appreciated detail.

MagSafe strength came in borderline average which were 9N to pull accessories off and 10.4 newtons to push them. That’s about 4% weaker than the average case we’ve tested. Over time, wear around the MagSafe ring will probably become noticeable. It’s fine for everyday use, but don’t expect it to cling to your charger as tightly as a Mous or ESR case.

In rigidity testing, the case required 22.4N to bend at 8mm, which is 24% worse than average. The soft top section is to blame. The top section was flexible enough that the whole case feels a little floppy when removed from the phone.

This is where things get strange. Despite being thin and flexible, the Ridge Aramid Case absolutely crushed our corner drop test. The iPhone only experienced 7.2G of force on impact which was 30% lower than average. That shallow air cavity between the case and phone actually worked like a tiny suspension system, absorbing more shock than expected. We double-checked the data just to be sure, and it wasn’t a fluke.

Rotation during drops was also about 20% better than average, meaning the phone stabilized faster mid-fall. However, the settling rate was slightly below average, and because of that floppy top, the screen made direct contact in face-first drops. In other words, it failed. For camera-lens drops, the TPU lip helped absorb initial impact, but the phone bounced longer than usual, raising overall stress slightly above average.

Value

At $75 this isn’t a cheap case, and that’s where the hesitation starts. It nails corner protection but misses the mark where it matters most, the screen-down impacts. The materials and finish feel premium, but the loose fit and flexible frame hold it back. You’re paying for a name and a fiber weave more than all-around protection.

Verdict

We’re honestly on the fence with this one. The Ridge Aramid Case is the definition of a “gym bro with chicken legs”. It has impressive upper body strength, weak core stability. It’s tough where it counts in corners but fails in face-first protection. If you’re a Ridge fan or you just love thin aramid-style cases, it’s not a bad pick as long as you’re okay replacing a few screen protectors along the way.
