The Spigen Tough Armor has been around longer than most reviewers have been testing cases and there’s a reason for that. When you have a good design, it’s timeless. This year, we finally have the data to prove what we’ve always suspected: the Tough Armor isn’t just tough by name, it’s genuinely protective.

How We Test

Our case testing procedure for the iPhone 17’s:

  • Buy the case ourselves
  • Measure all the physical dimensions of the case:
    • Weight
    • Size
    • Back rigidity
    • Corner/Back Thickness
    • Corner compression
  • Rank the handling and access of the iPhone in the case
    • Perform magnetic strength tests using a force meter
    • Perform audio tests (if needed using a DB meter)
  • Perform 30 corner, face and camera lump drop tests. This data is collected from the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. We’ve built custom drop rigs to ensure every drop almost identical. To gauge the iPhone’s protective abilities, we measure:
    • Average peak deceleration
    • Average decay rate
    • Average impulse
    • Average max rotation
    • Average angular displacement
    • Average settling time
  • After we collect all the data, we then run it through or scoring formula to figure out how well the case ranks.

We’ve got a few more ideas to implement for the next round of iPhone’s including more data collection during drops as well as high speed camera photos of the initial impacts.

With the iPhone 17 version, Spigen didn’t cut corners. While some brands reused their old molds, Spigen refined theirs. The polycarbonate back now wraps around the camera bump for a more integrated look. It’s still paired with a TPU frame and that familiar yellow impact foam that cradles your iPhone. At 58g, it’s lighter than it looks, though it adds about 65% to your phone’s overall bulk. You still get that tiny, borderline useless kickstand, but the Tough Armor continues to look and feel like a serious case for everyday use.

Structurally, the Tough Armor plays it safe but smart. The corners and back both measure 3.2mm thick. Spigen’s impact foam is back where it belongs: in the corners. A few past years had gaps in protection, but this version fixes that. Inside, the foam layout looks a bit lopsided thanks to the kickstand cutout, but functionally, it works.

Rigidity testing revealed a weak spot: it took just 16N to bend 8mm, about 46% below average. The polycarbonate back is there but doesn’t provide consistent stiffness along the edges. That flexibility might raise eyebrows, but the drop data tells a different story.

Handling has been a mixed bag this year. The Tough Armor feels smoother than ever. The tacky rubber coating from older models are now gone. Even the TPU sides are sleek. The only thing saving it from feeling slippery is that its edges match the iPhone’s natural width, so it doesn’t feel like you’re holding a brick. The integrated buttons are big, tactile, and easy to find, while the Action button is massive and has a distinct texture that’s hard to miss. Spigen even includes a dedicated camera control button which something we wish more cases did. Screen edges stay low enough for easy swiping, so day-to-day use feels natural.

MagSafe strength landed right in the middle of the pack: 9.2N to pull, 11.7N to push. That’s average overall, but still stronger than Apple’s own cases. So, no issues sticking to chargers or mounts here.

When it comes to real-world drops, the Spigen Tough Armor earns its name. During corner drops, it recorded an initial impact of 9.7G which was 7% better than average. The case spun more (about 20% faster rotation), but its settling rate was 45% better, and the total force ended up 8% lower. It takes a bit longer to stop moving completely, but the energy absorption is impressive.

Face-first drops are its weakest area. The first impact registered 5% higher than average, and it settled 34% slower. Still, total force was 11% better, meaning it absorbed shock quickly once it landed. It’s not perfect, but it’s not a failure either.

Camera bump protection, however, was a highlight. Thanks to the raised PC frame, the first impact was 10% lower, and total force 23% below average. If Spigen ever adds impact foam around that camera zone, it could turn this into one of the strongest all-around protectors we’ve ever tested.

Value

For around the same price as most mid-range cases, the Tough Armor offers proven protection that many “rugged” cases only promise. The kickstand may be gimmicky, but everything else delivers. This isn’t a case that just looks tough; it’s one backed by actual data from over 30 drops.

Verdict

Would we use the Spigen Tough Armor if we weren’t reviewers? Absolutely. It feels thinner than it should, protects better than most, and still holds up after years of iteration. If you want a daily driver case that can take real hits (and you don’t mind a decorative kickstand), this one’s an easy recommendation.
