Urban Armor Gear Review – iPhone 6

We definitely recommend this iPhone 6 case. Find out why in our Urban Armor Gear Review

The Urban Armor Gear case for the iPhone 6 is one of the slimmest yet tough case that we’ve found for the iPhone 6. It’s lightweight, uniquely designed and it will provide shock protection up to 4 ft for your iPhone 6. Some of the design aspects of this case are surprising but in general, we would definitely recommend this iPhone 6.

There aren’t any fatal flaws to this case and if we’re being picky, we’d have to say that the Urban Armor Gear case suffers just a bit when it comes to your iPhone handling and screen usability. Just a tiny amount though because based on our time with this case, we gave it a score of 4.3 Eh’s out of 5 which is one of the higher rated cases in our grouping of slim iPhone 6 cases.

At MobileReviewsEh, our reviews are based on actual usage so we actually use for a while before actually rating the case. For the Urban Armor Gear, it was used to monitor the form of my squats, it was dropped from a height of 4ft and most importantly, we compared the case against the Speck CandyShell, Spigen Tough Armor and Otterbox Symmetry. After we go through the details, I will talk bait about the differences between all those cases.

Design – Very slim and tough but why are there fake screws?

This case is slim, in fact the only case that is slimmer in our current crop of iPhone 6 cases is the stock Apple silicone case. The Urban Armor Gear fits well together, the case is far enough from the screen protector that it won’t scratch it off and the materials on the case seem to wear well over time.

The look of the case is fairly unique though some people may be put off by it. We didn’t take any points off for the odd cutouts that occur on the back of the case but the Urban Armor Gear has made the case actually look like it has screws in it.

Protection – Why are there so many holes in the Urban Armor Gear case for the iPhone 6?

The Urban Armor Gear is one of the few slim iPhone cases that is actually drop rated though there is only 1 layer of protection (according to their website) which may be why it’s only drop rated up to 4 ft which is approx. texting height of an average person. As we mentioned before, we’ve gone and performed the drop test for this case in order to do the Urban Case Armor review for the iPhone 6.

We do have a small issue with the dust protection of the case as there are several cutouts in the case that may allow dust and smaller pieces of debris to get between your iPhone and the Urban Armor Gear. Even the buttons for the power and volume areas have small cutouts.

In terms of screen protection, the edges of the case are high enough that it will keep your iPhone’s touchscreen off a flat surface and Urban Armor Gear does include a screen protector for you to install that covers most of the iPhone’s touch screen. The sensor area at the top of the iPhone isn’t covered by the screen protector.

Functionality – It’s slick so be careful, it might slip out of your hand

Getting to your iPhone As I mentioned at the beginning, handling your iPhone inside the Urban Armor Gear for the iPhone 6 might be annoying for people who really like their iPhone cases to be a bit “grippier”. The materials that are used on the case are feel matted and don’t offer a lot of friction between the case and your hand. However, Urban Armor Gear has added skids on the corners of the case which prevent it from slipping on tables.

The edges of the case might be annoying for some as well. They are not pronounce but because they don’t start overlapping the case until it starts to round. The edges do not get in the way of typing on your keyboard.

One of the features that we really like about this case is how Urban Armor Gear has designed the headphone jack area. Most cases just have a large cutout for the headphones but they’ve designed it so that the case sits tightly around the opening but it still allows you to use larger than average headphone jacks. Urban Amor Gear has designed the case to be flush with the opening of the headphone jack and from what we can tell, this will add a bit more stability to the headphone jack area.

With all things considered, we give this a score of 4.3 Eh’s out of 5. We like this case better than the Speck Candyshell because its thinner and lighter, isn’t as bulky as the Otterbox Symmetry and offers better protection than your Spigen Tough Armor.

You should compare that case to the rokform case I think it matches up just as nice and maybe even better than this one your showing.

You should compare this case to the rokform cases they have for the iPhone 6, in my opinion the rokform case matches up just as well as this case and has a little bit more to it to make it a step better.

Any chance of reviewing some of the cheaper cases, like the Monoprice offerings?

I ordered a “PC+TPU Protector Case for 4.7-inch iPhone® 6 – Black” for $7.20 (free shipping!) figuring at that price, even if it sucks it will at least work as a stopgap, but I’d love to see reviews of some of these off-the-beaten-path cases. And hey, you can review every style of Monoprice case for less than the cost of reviewing one big-name case 🙂

Also, I’d like to see reviews of all cases mention compatibility with aftermarket Lightning cables (like Monoprice) that are larger than the Apple ones.

    Thanks!

Can you do a case review for the rooCASE Gelledge Slim Hybrid TPU/PC and or the rooCASE Gelledge Premium Hybrid PC/TPU for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus? Thanks!

Aaron good review on your tough cases. Can you do a review of Cygnett workmate? This thing was dropped from 3 meters and it still survived. It had the same type of concept were it makes three different type of plastics. I am a tough armor user myself but Cygnett caught my eyes. Keep up the good work!

protection has 4.5 leaves but in the description says 3.5/5. Which is the case? I’m desperately looking for a new case that is slim and offers great protection. I have an otterbox defender now because i have been known to destroy phones by dropping them in the past but it is way too bulky, almost to the point of can’t use the thing. Protection wise, which is the best slim phone you have? I have been thinking incipio dual pro, UAG or Atmos.

      Sorry, fixed the table.

The Thule Atmos X3 feels toughest to me so far. Another case to consider would be the Ballistic Urbanite. It’s a bit bulkier but that case will give you 6 ft drop protection.

I checked out the Atmos and didn’t think it would give me the screen protection in the case i dropped my phone on the screen side, which is my biggest fear since I’ve done it multiple times before. Which of the Atmos X3/Incipio Dual Pro/UAG have the biggest lip? I think that would be the best thing to keep my phone screen from cracking from a fall right?

I’ll look into the Ballistic Urbanite too. Is it smaller than the Otterbox Defender?

Thanks for all your help. I come here first for help w/cases.

Well, we did drop our Thule Atmos X3 face first for the iPhone 5 in our drop test and it was fine. Between those cases, the UAG has the biggest lip.

The Urbanite is smaller than the Defender.

Great review! You mentioned your wife didn’t like the look of the case because it looked boyish. I love everything about the case but feel the same way-isn’t there a way to get a pretty but tough case?! I want to be able to buy it on Amazon with my Prime shipping benefit too…since I want it now before I drop my new phone. Did I mention I have two young children and a home full of hardwood floors?

      Pretty but tough? Ummm…

I’ll ask my wife tonight…is there a group of cases that you’re leaning towards that I’ve reviewed?

Aaron, love your videos!! I only buy cases based on your reviews. Can you review the Magpul field case for the iphone 6? It got really great reviews and is usually sold out on Amazon. I’ve never seen a phone case this hard to get. Seems very similar to the UAG (which I have after watching your channel). I would like to know what you think.

I bought the transparent version for this case used on a website for 20 bucks. As you said. The build quality is very good. Its one of my favourite case dor my iphone 6 . I have a few cases. The spigen slim armor, speck candyshell grip and the otterbox symmetry. And this is my most favourite. Recommended even though i bought it used.
