The Best iPhone 8 Cases

What are the best cases out there for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus?

At Mobile Reviews Eh!, we base all our reviews on actual usage. With the iPhone 8, the question we had to answer for ourselves was “What’s the best case for Apple’s newest iPhone?“.

Here’s what we’ve come up with.

We’ll update this list frequently as we get new cases so check back frequently to stay on top of what we think is the best,

The Best Slim iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Case

Loopy Case

Loopy case review- Loopy Case functionality

The Loopy Case is great. Sure it doesn’t look like a normal but every first person FOV shot in our iPhone 8 torture test video was shot with a Loopy case.

If you value functionality over aesthetics, you need the Loopy Case. Everything you do on the iPhone is going to be 100% better the moment your finger gets into the loop. In fact, the Loopy Case is going to be tougher than most tough cases as the iPhone isn’t going to accidentally fall out of your hand. We’re pretty sure that if the iPhone is falling while your finger is in the loop, you’ve got bigger problems.

Now a downside of the Loopy Case is that it won’t offer your iPhone much drop protection if it is dropped (with out your finger). So you just need to be careful when you’re pulling your device out of your bag, pocket or purse.  Loopy has made improvements since the iPhone 7 version as the loop doesn’t slide out and the rounded edges helps with long therm usage. Buy direct HERE and don’t forget to use the code MRE5!

Honourable Mentions - iPhone 8 Slim Cases

UAG Monarch

Urban Armor Gear Monarch iPhone 7 Review

Speck Presidio Grip

Great handling - Speck Presidio GRIP iPhone 7 Review

Thule Atmos X4

Texture - Thule Atmos X4 iPhone 7 Review

The Thule Atmos X4 is one of Aaron’s personal favourites as it handles well, the buttons are great and the screen protector that comes with the case is incredibly tough. The Atmos X4 is quite wide though.

The Speck Presidio Grip  was #1 for the longest time but it looks like Speck decided to include a headphone jack cutout on newer versions which makes the bottom of the iPhone 8 in the case look funny. But that grip on the case is great.

You can never go wrong with a Spigen iPhone case as long as you by a case with a soft-rubber coating (they’re usually the darker cases). The Spigen Tough armor has been protecting our iPhone’s since the iPhone 6 and we feel comfortable dropping our iPhones in Spigen cases. From our perspective, the Spigen Slim Armor and Tough armor are generally the same case with a minor shape difference. The Spigen Hybrid Armor has the same polycarbonate shell but the TPU is clear.

The Best iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Bumper

K11 Bumper by Thanotech

ThanoTech K11 Bumper Review - iPhone 7

The ThanoTech K11 Bumper is a tiny but TOUGH bumper for your iPhone. It is designed to allow you to showcase the design of the iPhone without the bulk or sacrificing protection. ThanoTech uses a unique method of fusing metal and TPU together and is currently the only company that can legally do so. It may be hard to believe, but this little bumper can protect your iPhone 8 Plus from a 6ft face first drop. Don’t believe us? Check out the full review.

With the iPhone 8, this bumper is definitely going to be able to show off the glass back of Apple’s newest iPhone. In fact, the bumper was one of the first products we tried our iPhone 8 on because we love the glass back of the iPhone 8 (see how much punishment the glass back on the iPhone 8 can handle).

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – IPHONE 8 BUMPERS

Rhinoshield Mod

X-Doria Defense Shield

X Doria Defense Shield Review - iPhone 6 cases

The Rhinoshield Mod replaces the Rhinoshield Crashguard. In fact, the Mod replaces the Rhinoshield Playproof as well. Evolutive Labs, the makers of Rhinoshield cases has some of the toughest cases out there offering 11.5 drop protection for your iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

The X-Doria Defense Shield  isn’t a bumper but it’s the only case that has a removable bumper so that’s close enough for us.

The Best Tough iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Case

Griffin Summit

Griffin Summit Review - iPhone 6 - Belt Holster

The Griffin Summit was the toughest iPhone 6 case that we reviewed and it’s still the same for the iPhone 7 and 8. We couldn’t a difference between the two versions.

Tough iPhone case were very popular for the iPhone 5 and 6 but we haven’t had much interest with the iPhone 7 and we’re guessing for the iPhone 8 as well. We’re assuming that the iPhone has gotten tougher over the years which means cases do not need to be as bulky to provide the same level of protection. With slimmer cases, you eliminate the problems of poor sound and reduced handling of the iPhone 8. The only redeeming feature of tough cases is that they usually come with belt holsters.

On the Griffin Summit, the gap between the iPhone’s touch screen is noticeable but could handle another screen protector if you wanted. We like the unique design of the front cover sliding (rather than clipping) into the case (the video shows it best). Check out the full review that we did for the iPhone 6 version or get it on  now!

Honourable Mentions - Tough iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Cases

The Otterbox Defender is also a decent choice but scores lower than the Griffin Summit. We believe the Griffin Summit holds up better in all-weather situations as the entire iPhone is covered up. One of the reasons why we like the Defender is the fact that you can find them anywhere so if you need a case quickly, you can easily get one at a big box store. See how much the Otterbox Defender is on  for the iPhone 8.

The Best iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Wallet Case

UOLO 2 in 1 Wallet Folio Case

Uolo 2 in 1 Magnetic Folio Case - The full wallet replacement for the iPhone X

We weren’t expecting anything from UOLO. One day, these cases showed up on our door and discovered that having a removable case within a wallet case is a life changer!

That’s right, you can keep your iPhone with your wallet when you need to or leave the wallet at home and use just the case. The flexibility of UOLO’s 2-in-1 case is what we love about it.

The wallet will store more than your average Spigen wallet case and has a decent amount of texture so it handles well. The magnetic latch keeps the folio together but doesn’t work well if the wallet is too full.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – IPHONE 8 WALLET CASES

Alternatives to check out include the Moshi Overture (previous #1) and the Danny P Wallet.

Moshi Overture

Moshi Overture vs Uolo 2 in 1 vs Spigen Wallet S

Danny P Wallet

Danny P Leather Wallet Review - Italian Leather - iPhone 6s

BUDU Modular case

Budu Modular Case Review - iPhone 7

The Moshi Overture  is a feature packed wallet case. It can be used as a kickstand and includes a removable microfibre cloth on the inside of the case that ensures your iPhone’s screen is fingerprint free! The Moshi Overture will hold more than the UOLO case.

The Danny P Wallet is something else. Instead of trying to wrap a wallet around an iPhone, Danny P decided to put an iPhone in a wallet. It works quite well in our opinion. You can definitely tell that the Danny P wallet is made from real leather.

The BUDU case, one of our preferred modular cases has a wallet add-on that has the same type of functionality as the UOLO 2-in-1. If you don’t need a wallet case, you can take the wallet portion off and attach a different accessory to the case.

The Best iPhone 8 and 8 Plus On-The-Go Wallet Case

CM4 Q-CARD CASE

Q Card Wallet Case - iPhone 7 case reviews

What is an On-The-Go wallet case? It’s one that you can easily take a few critical cards with your iPhone while keeping it slim. The Q-Card case is one of the fancier on-the-go cases as the wallet portion is made from leather. The cherry on top is the tiny slit for you to use a card which adds a kickstand capability to the wallet.

Our scoring system takes into account all these little things so while the Q-Card case may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, it is the most functional. Get your Q-Card case on Amazon!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – ON-THE-GO IPHONE 8 WALLET CASES

UAG Metropolis

We love the flap - Urban Armor Gear Metropolis iPHone 7 Review

Innovation Vault

Vault Slim Wallet Case - iPhone 7 case reviews

An alternative to the Q-card case is the Urban Armor Gear Metropolis and Silk Innovation Vault.

The UAG Metropolis  works well but can only store one card so if you only need a case to carry a something like a bus pass, the UAG Metropolis will suffice. We like the texture on the case and the magnetic latch keeps the case together.

Another worthy contender is the Silk Innovation Vault . The Innovation Vault is the only case that allows us to easily access our cards regardless of how many are in the slot. Even the last card! It is thicker than the CM4 Q-Card case.

THE BEST IPHONE 8 BATTERY CASE

APPLE SMART BATTERY CASE

Vs Apple Smart Battery Case - Kuner Kuke iPhone 7 Smart Case Review

Need more power? Check out Apple’s Smart Battery Case. We were thrown off by the design of the Smart Battery Case when it first came out because of its awkward shape. After our usage period, we realised that the tiny integration with iOS 11’s widget and use of an actual Lightning port made this battery case a joy to use. The ability to quickly remove the case is also a plus.

See how much the Apple Smart Battery Case on Amazon.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS BATTERY CASES

Kuner Kuke

Vs Apple Smart Battery Case - Kuner Kuke iPhone 7 Smart Case Review

Mophie Hold Force

Mophie Force Hold Review - iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

If you need spare power, you might consider the Mophie Force Hold or the Kuner Kuke case.

The Mophie Force Hold  isn’t technically a battery case but the magnetic back coupled with a magnetic Juice Pack is pretty close. The benefit of this setup is the ability to remove the bulk of battery when you don’t need it. Also, if you’re wondering, the magnetic back doesn’t get in the way of wireless charging.

The Kuner Kuke  case is unique. Not only does it come with a spare battery, it has a Micro-SD slot which allows you to expand the storage capacity of the iPhone. It’s the perfect solution for a power hungry, storage gobbling power user! The downside of the case is that you have to use Kuner’s own app to access the extra storage space. The app works but isn’t as polished as it the native iOS UI in our opinion.

THE BEST WATERPROOF IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS CASE

CATALYST WATERPROOF

Catalyst Waterproof review for the iPhone 7

The Catalyst Waterproof for the iPhone 8 has been updated. It looks quite similar to the iPhone 6 version but Catalyst has somehow managed to drop the water protection down to 33ft. If you need a waterproof case that’s tougher than the Catalyst, check out the Hitcase Pro (below).

The sound coming from the Catalyst Waterproof isn’t great but bearable. The rotary switch on the case makes the iPhone easier to use in the case.

If you’re planning on shooting underwater camera footage, you definitely need to get the Catalyst Waterproof. Couple the case with Catalyst’s wristband and you have the best setup for snorkelling or swimming in the ocean. See if your local Amazon store has them in stock!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – WATERPROOF IPHONE 8 CASES

If you’re looking for a case for the occasional rough day, get the Ghostek Atomic 3.0. For another day-to-day alternative, check out the Dog and Bone Wetsuit Impact. In fact, the LifeProof Fre and Pelican Marine would be good choices as well. Check out the comparison tool for the iPhone 7 cases for more details.

Ghostek Atomic

Improved mute switch - Ghostek Atomic 3.0 iPhone 7 Review

LifeProof Fre

Handling - LifeProof Fre iPHone 7 Review

The Ghostek Atomic 3.0  is the only water proof case that allows you to use a screen protector and a skin. Other products require you to strip your iPhone 8 down before installation which is annoying but Ghostek has designed their Atomic 3.0 so that you don’t have to remove the $50 dollars worth of accessories you put on your iPhone.

As a side note, if you’re looking for the best sounding case, get the LifeProof Fre . It will still mute sound coming from the iPhone but not as much as other cases. Some of our readers and viewers over the last year have complained about Catalyst’s customer service. If customer service is important to you, then a Lifeproof case is the way to go. Lifeproof customer service is awesome.

THE BEST MOUNTABLE (AND BADASS) IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS CASE

HITCASE PRO

HitCase Pro Review - iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S

If you’re looking for an iPhone case that you can take to the extreme, than you need a Hitcase Pro. We were very excited to see a redesign on the HitCase rather than a minor update like most case manufacturers do. The new Hitcase Pro is a beefier HItcase Shield with out the screen accessibility issues.

The strength of the Hitcase Pro is the ability to mount it anywhere (with the right accessories). For the last few years, we’ve been mounting our iPhones on cars, bikes, dogs and selfie sticks. We’ve taken our iPhone’s into the ocean countless times with the HitCase Pro and we haven’t lost one or had one break yet.

The HitCase Pro is officially waterproof up to 33ft but Hitcase has told us that the HitCase Pro will handle depths up to 100ft (but the iPhone will turn off). The Hitcase Pro is also drop-rated to 16ft which is more than twice the previous versions drop-rating. We even did a 12ft face first drop on concrete and the iPhone survived!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – MOUNTABLE IPHONE 8 CASES

We’ll be honest, we could have used the ProShot case as our go to mountable/vacation case. We gave the hat-tip to HitCase because of the accessibility. You can still use your iPhone well with the HitCase whereas the ProShot’s going to require a second case one you’re done filming all the awesome things you’re doing near water.

With that being said, if are going to be spending a lot of time swimming, snorkelling and surfing, you might want to go with the ProShot. We personally love snorkelling on vacation so between the two, we would go with the ProShot. But that’s just our personal preference.

ProShot

ProShot Case Review - Polycarbonate Case - Waterproof iPhone 6s cases

Another upside to the ProShot is the fact that it is a tank of a case. The latches are large and strong and the clear polycarbonate is quite thick. We reviewed a similar case, the Optrix XD5 with the same general design and we were able to drive over the case with our car without any issue.

THE BEST IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS CASE FOR MOBILE GAMING

LOOPY CASES

Loopy Case - The Best Cases for the iPhone X

This is probably the first time that one product ends up in two categories.

We will say that one-handed use cases and accessories aren’t for everybody. They’re awkwardly shaped but the functionality they offer helps a lot when our hands get tired. Most of these accessories involve transferring the weight of your iPhone to hang off your fingers rather than relying on your grip strength.

The best one-handed usage functionality has come from the Loopy Vibe for the iPhone 6’s. We’ve got updated Loopy’s coming our way in the next couple of weeks, so we’ll see if they’ve gotten better. We also review a product called the GoLoop which is an excellent alternative to the Loopy. Get $5 dollars off your Loopy now!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – IPHONE 8 GAMING CASES

We’ve also reviewed the UnGrip, PopSocket and other various adhesive based metal rings.

Ungrip

Ungrip Review - Usability

PopSocket

PopSockets Review - iPhone/Android - Handling

The Ungrip has a lot of customizable colors and allows you to use an existing case. The entire setup isn’t as slick as the Loopy case. We occasionally found our fingers getting stuck in the cloth loop.

The PopSocket is another worthy alternative. The PopSocket is the most efficient product for one-handed usage as the weight of the iPhone is spread between two fingers which improves long terms usage.

THE BEST ULTRA-THIN IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS CASES

Spigen Thin-Fit 360

QMNP Magnet mount - Spigen Thin Fit 360 iPhone 7 Review

If you’re looking for a case that a bit of protection without the extra bulk, you’ll need to check out the Spigen Thin-Fit 360. This is one of the best iPhone cases we have ever used (out of the 4 years of reviewing cases).

Unlike most cases, this Spigen case covers 99% of your iPhone so it is going to be well-protected from any day-to-day drops. The Thin-Fit 360 also comes with TWO glass screen protectors that will also fit the LifeProof Nuud (which is a bonus).

The “cherry on top of this wonderful cherry sundae” is the ability to add a magnet to the case to mount it on our favourite car mount.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS – IPHONE 8 ULTRA-THIN CASE

The Pitaka case is another case worth checking out. This may be one of the lowest rated cases in terms of protection but that won’t matter if you don’t drop your iPhone alot.

The texture of the case is quite nice and the design is unique. The Pitaka is made from Aramid (similar to Kevlar) so it can be incredibly thin while offering a tiny bit of drop protection in the off-chance you do drop your iPhone.

Screen protection might be an issue as the case itself doesn’t extend past the screen of the iPhone but Pitaka does include a glass screen protector.
