Speck MightyShell Review (with Faceplate) – iPhone 6

Design – Feels solid but is a bit bulky

In terms of design the Speck Mightyshell is decently sized. Its not as thin as other though cases such as the Thule Atmos X3 and will add a bit of bulk to your iPhone. With that being said, the Mightyshell does feel very well built and we’re impressed with the back of the case as it has a matte look which doesn’t attract scratches like the back of the regular Candyshell.

Protection – 2X Drop Protection? Awesome..Not Really.

In terms of protection, despite being marketed as a tough case, with words like 2X military grade protective design and 360 degree protection, we feel that this case doesn’t provide anymore protection than a Griffin Survivor Slim or Incipio Dual Pro. If you’ve seen our videos before, you’ll know that we don’t like fluff and we tend to make fun of fluff.

Speck claims this case is 2X drop tested but doesn’t actually provide any values for high the drop protection actually is. For the average, military rated case, it is droppable from a height of 4 ft. Assuming this correct for the MightyShell, at 2X, the height would be 8 ft. That make sense, right?

We dropped our iPhone 6 Plus in the MightyShell from a height of 6 ft and ended up with a iPhone 6 Plus with a non-responsive screen. No outer damage but the iPhone is useless.

According to Speck, the screen protector offers 2X shatter protection and has 4 layers of awesome stuff. From what we can tell you, our screen didn’t break at 18 inches so this screen protector will do a decent job of keeping your iPhone safe. But this isn’t the awesomeness, its the functionality of your iPhone under this screen protector that makes a world of difference.

Functionality – The best screen protector we’ve used

The screen protector is sticky which means there are no gaps between your finger and screen protector so your iPhone’s screen sensitivity is maintained. The notch at the bottom, above the Touch ID allows you to easily access your swipe menus and because the screen protector is sticky, you’re not going to have dusting problems where dust collects around the touch ID sensor. You’ll notice that the iPhone 6 Faceplate that we have doesn’t have this notch.

In terms of viewability, this is one of the best screen protectors that we’ve used. The clarity of your iPhone’s HD screen is maintained and there is no additional glare or reflections.

In terms of actually getting to your iPhone, access to the buttons is fairly easy, you have a small cutout for the mute switch and you’re able to use slightly larger than average cables. We do have to mention that the case does feel a little slicker as the back is fairly smooth so there’s not much to hold onto when using your iPhone with one hand. The edges of the case are a bit rubbery but the MightyShell doesn’t come close to the handling that the Speck CandyShell Grip provides.
