The best way to protect a $1000 iPhone thatʼs covered in glass? A case! Here’s what we think are the Top 10 cases for the iPhone XR based on our 6+ years of reviewing iPhone cases.
We’ve gone through 100’s of cases over the last few years so that you don’t have to risk your $ on a bad case! Now we’ll be honest with you, because we haven’t used the XR version of the cases for some of the products BUT case designs do not change much over the years and the biggest difference between the iPhone XR and iPhone XS is the thickness of the device. Which is something we’ve taken into account with the scores!
Here's our TOp 10 list for iPhone XR cases
#1 Mous Limitless & Clarity
PROS:
- Tough
Handles well
Comes with screen protector
Modular accessories (only for Limitless 2.0)
CONS:
- Slightly bigger than all the other cases on this list
- Fingerprinting will be an issue on Clarity
The Mous Limitless 2.0 is well-made, tough case. The different finishes actually feel part of the case, not just an afterthought. We had the opportunity to re-review the Mous Limitless and we took it through a gauntlet of drops ranging from 4 ft to 13 ft and we still have a working iPhone. Every aspect that we don’t like from the previous version was fixed and actually went beyond our expectations. The Mous Limitless 2.0 survived 48 drop tests from our review with only a few scratches and a broken rear camera.
The added accessories, wall mount, flip wallet and card wallet, also adds to the functionality of the case. The flip wallet was so great to use that it replaced our old favorite wallet case.
There are also subtle design choices that can help you during your day-to-day usage. The flip wallet can hold more cards and money thanks to the elastic and sleeve inside the case and also the added pockets in the back of the case. The auto-align system of the magnet is also perfect especially when using the card wallet accessories.
Aside from the added protection, Mous Limitless 2.0 also has a free screen protector.
The Mous Clarity may seem like a clear Limitless but it is a completely different case that scores almost as well as the Mous Limitless 2.0. The clear back is highly scratch resistant and has a slightly tacky texture which improves the handling. The Mous Clarity is thinner than the Mous Limitless 2.0 (there’s no magnets in the case) but still has the larger corners with the tapered center. We’re not big fans of clear cases due to the fingerprinting but if you need one to show off the color of your iPhone the Mous Clarity is a solid choice.

#2 Rhinoshield MOD NX
PROS:
- Modular camera case
- Comes with a wrist strap attachment point
- Customizable
- Offers great drop protection
CONS:
- The back plate will make your phone slide around easily
The Rhinoshield MOD NX is an upgraded version of the Rhinoshield MOD. However, the upgrades aren’t that big. The Rhinoshield MOD NX only got thicker and the overall functionality of the case was made easier for changing bumpers. Not to mention, Rhinoshield MOD NX doesn’t handle like a wet bar of soap anymore! We’re also still actually impressed with how well the buttons handle.
The Rhinoshield MOD NX is also one of the few cases that offers your iPhone a stupid amount of drop protection. If you’re looking for a decently sized case that can take a beating, get a Rhinoshield case.
Evolutive Labs upgraded the Rhinoshield camera lens system and it is top notch. Most coompanies use a screw system which is a hassle to use on the go. Evolutive Labs went with a simpler screw system which makes lens swapping much easier.

#3 LOOPY CASE

4.4 EH’S OUT OF 5

FULL REVIEW HERE!
PROS:
- The most useful case ever
- Allows you to get the most out of your iPhone
- The only case that prevents drops 100% of the time if your hand is in the loop
CONS:
- Your iPhone ends up having a hump
- Buttons are a smidge tougher to use
Hands down, Loopy case is the most useful case we have ever used, it’s our personal favorite case. The Loopy case changes your iPhone from being a device that you worry about dropping and breaking to a device thatʼs easy to use. Itʼs incredibly handy when your hands are full. The moment your finger is in the loop, your iPhone is not going to accidentally fall. Unless you fall. Which would be the bigger problem.
Out of all the cases on this list, the Loopy is the only case that we would say is made for real life. It greatly simplifies how we use my iPhone in every aspect of our life. Except for wireless charging but letʼs face it, Qi-charging isnʼt very good.
Honestly, words canʼt describe how useful it is, so watch 21 things you definitely canʼt do with any other case except for the Loopy.

#4 PITAKA MAGCASE PRO
PROS:
- Compatible with magnetic car mounts and Qi-chargers
- Lots of texture on the case
- Carbon fibre back
CONS:
- Normal face first drop protection (despite claims)
From a handling perspective, the Pitaka MagCase Pro handles almost as good as the Speck Presidio Grip. The main reason why it scores higher than the Speck product is the fact that the magnets on the case allow you to use it with Qi-chargers as well as magnetic car mounts. The Pitaka MagCase Pro has a carbon fibre back which improves the lock of the case and will not scratch as easily as other carbon fibre cases.

#5 SPECK PRESIDIO GRIP
PROS:
- Grippy
- Great handling
CONS:
- Donʼt drop it face first from 10 ft
Speck Presidio Grip is a case that we constantly gravitate towards because of how well an iPhone handles in the case. The ribs on the case definitely help with the handling of the iPhone. The ribs on the case also prevents your iPhone XR from sliding around.
However, the case will suffer a noticeable wear and tear issues due to the rubber edges. The Speck Presidio Grip isnʼt also too bulky and makes your iPhone feel solid. Just donʼt drop it from 10ft face first onto a sidewalk without a screen protector.

#6 GHOSTEK CLOAK 3
PROS:
- Unique design
- Budget friendly
- Handles well
CONS:
- Minor fit issue at the bottom of the case
If youʼve got a small budget for your case but wanʼt something that doesnʼt look like a generic ripoff, get the Ghostek Cloak 3. Ghostek Cloak 3 isn’t your standard TPU + PC frame type of case. This is because the fit between the TPU and PC frame is amazing. The metallic buttons also work extremely well.
On the TPU sleeve, there is a hatching where the PC meets the TPU which improves the handling of the iPhone inside of the case. The handling is also helped by the thinness of the Cloak 3. The back of the case is recessed slightly which also helps with the bulk of the case.
The soft-rubber coated frame, coupled with the hatching on the TPU results in a great-handling case for your iPhone X. We generally didn’t have any issues with the Cloak 3. It’s a great case!
The last upside of the Ghostek Cloak 3 is that it comes in a variety of different colors!

#7 CATALYST IMPACT PROTECTION
PROS:
- Tough
- Thin
- Amazing buttons
CONS:
- Wide
- Back will scratch easily
Catalyst Impact Protection is one of the few cases that weʼd feel comfortable dropping our $1000 iPhones from 10 ft. The Catalyst Impact Protection looks like it would handle like a bar of soap but it doesnʼt. Catalyst Impact Protection handles quite well as the micro-texture on the edge of the case ensures a decent connection between the device and your hands. The buttons on the case work quite well and the rotary switch for the iPhone’s mute switch is phenomenal.

#8 SPIGEN TOUGH ARMOR
PROS:
- Relatively cheap
- Handles well (if you get the right version)
CONS:
- A little boring
The Spigen Tough Armor should be on everyoneʼs list as a go to case if you donʼt know which one to get or you just donʼt really care how the case looks on your device. Weʼve been reviewing them for years and they hold up well. Make sure you get a darker coloured case as the coatings on certain colors will not handle as well.

#9 OTTERBOX PURSUIT
PROS:
- Updated design works well
- Handles well
- Feels tough
- Great button access
CONS:
- Tough to install
- Will slide around easier than the average case
- Bulkier than the average case
- Pricey
.
The new Otterbox Pursuit feels tougher than the old Otterbox Pursuit because of how the TPU folds over the frame rather than snapping together along the middle of the case. This design feature is going to work better in the long term when it comes to drops as there is no chance that the new Otterbox Pursuit is going to split in half during a drop. The speakers can also never be muted on the new Otterbox Pursuit which is handy if youʼre using the device outside or in louder environments. And if youʼre really clumsy, the Otterbox Pursuit allows you to attach a lanyard to the case.

#10 SPIGEN THIN FIT 360
PROS:
- Relatively cheap
- Handles well (if you get the right version)
- Comes with two screen protectors
CONS:
- Not as tough as other cases
If youʼre looking for an ultra thin case, go with the Spigen Thin-Fit 360. This case will cover almost your entire iPhone which is great for those worried about general wear and tear across the entire device. The downside is that the case is made only from polycarbonate so it will offer the least drop protection on this list.
If youʼve been to this site before, youʼll know that we really enjoyed using the Spigen Reventon and ProGuard which shared the same design as the Thin-Fit 360 but Spigen isnʼt making those cases for the iPhone XSʼs unfortunately.
