Winnergear Topaz Review – The Topaz was a pleasant surprise. Find out why!

Today we’re going to do a review on the Topaz by Winnergear. Despite being marketed with fluff like Fillglass Nano-technology this is an edge to edge screen protectors that has been very pleasant to use. And it’s pretty tough.

For our Winnergear Topaz review, we’ve given it a score of 4.3 Eh’s out of 5. This is the highest rated edge to edge screen protectors, beating out the Cinder and the iMos. The design of the screen protector even works with some of the iPhone cases on our Top 10 Slim iPhone cases. To find out what how the Topaz ranks against other screen prtoectors, check out our Top 10 list for screen protectors.

Design – Huh, it’s pretty thin!

In terms of design, this is one of the thinnest edge-to-edge screen protectors that we’ve come across but despite the thinness, the corners are quite hard to chip. We didn’t have any issues with bubbling on the long term use screen protector on an iPhone 6. The fit is pretty impressive as it covers the entire glass face of the iPhone. With the thinness, we were fully expecting the Topaz to chip along the edges but despite our best efforts, we couldn’t get it to chip.

In fact, Winnergear’s tightly designed Topaz works with the Playproof, the Pong Radiation case, and the X4 which covers three out of five in our Top 10 list for slim iPhone cases.

Protection – Really? A hammer?

In terms of protection, keys and coins generally won’t scratch the screen protector. However, the Topaz on our iPhone 6s did end up with a significant scratch and the only way it got there was being rubbed against the inside of a Danny P leather wallet. The long term use Topaz on the iPhone 6 didn’t show any scratches.

Now when it comes to impact, Winnergears shows a video with a supposed iPhone with the Topaz taking a beating. We didn’t take it to the same extreme, but the Topaz did hold up well to our little experiment.

Functionality – There’s a screen protector on the iPhone?

For functionality, glare isn’t an issue; there aren’t any diffusion problems and sensitivity is top notch. The Fillglass Nanotechnology marketing fluff says that the coating improves the functionality of the screen protector by keeping it clearer and stronger than other glass. The only thing that we noticed was that the fingerprint resistance is a little stronger than other screen protectors. We’d put it on par with the Patchworks ITG silicate glass (that screen protector feels smoother though).

  • I love your reviews. Any idea what is up with the reviews on Amazon regarding this screen protector? I was going to buy it but it sounds like it may be a different product or something? /shrug

    • I have no idea about the Amazon reviews. For me, it's a little difficult to interpret Amazon reviews because there isn't a consistent way of rating a product.

  • Do you really feel that this is supiror to the CINDER and if so why? cause you hit the CINDER with a hammer and it didn't even shatter the screen, granted you didn't hit as hard, but i'm trying to decide to get this one or the CINDER for my Iphone 6 with a playproof case. Which one do you suggest?

    • I believe it worked. However, if you are getting the K11, get their E2E glass. You won't have any issues with the E2E since its cut to fit the K11.

  • Well I have to say I'm not sure what you got cause what I have has nothing but problems with bubbling. Its kind of a bummer.

  • Does this screen protector work with the rhinoshield solidsuit? I am considering buying both.

  • Thank you so much for doing these reviews! I recently got a 6+ so I picked up a playproof and a I got this winergear topaz magic fluff. After watching your review I knew this is what I wanted but as others have said Amazon had mixed reviews. Regardless I ordered it and installed today it went on nearley flawless however in their directions it says nothing about using the dust sticker they provide ( I used it). Also some people stated there're extra holes but I feel they may not know there are lights above the top speaker where the holes are. And alignment wasn't perfect I think I did a good job lining it up with the home button but it sits a hair below the front camera (does not effect it in any way that I have found yet) and a hair below the front speaker.

  • Hi there, I'm a big fan of your reviews! I bought one of these protectors With high expectations, however it is very clearly not all one piece with a distinct border where it goes from glass to what I am pretty sure is plastic. I have emailed them and they confirmed they changed the design. I'm super gutted as the new version feels no better than the cheap temporary one I was using till I found something better.

I thought I would let you know as your awesome review sadly no longer applies to the product they are shipping.

    Cheers!
    Tom

      • I have had this exact same issue! The first one that I purchased was amazing quality and came with a stiff black backing that had a tab at the top. Unfortunately there was a huge area where after 3 days it was still not adhering to my brand new out of the box never touched iPhone, so I ordered a second one. Just opened it and it is a totally totally different product. You can see the crappy plastic edges are haphazardly stuck to the flimsy glass screen, I can bend then inwards with my fingertips. It came with the normal cheap clear plastic protective film on the back that didn't even fully cover the protector. So so sooo dissapoiting - it is really atrocious that they have changed the product and are asking anything more than 5 dollars. Does anyone have a good alternative?

  • I just received this screen protector in the mail and it does not fit my phone in the case I have. This is a warning for anyone with the Speck candyshell grip case for iphone 6s. This looked like a good product, its unfortunate I can't use it.
