Today we’re going to do a review on Nodus’s Shell case. This is a slim, leather iPhone case that comes with an N52 magnet which means you have the world’s strongest magnet on the back of your iPhone.
One of the selling features that convinced us to review the Nodus Shell case was their claim of the “shielded” magnet. We’ve been reviewing cases for a while and never gave it much thought until now, and we were surprised at what we discovered!
For our Nodus Shell Case Review, we’ve given it a score of 4.3 Eh’s out of 5. This make is an above average case and with the added magnetic back functionality, makes it one of the more useful iPhone cases that we’ve reviewed. If you’re looking for cases with magnetic backs, check out our reviews for the Rokform, the Spigen Car mount and Nite Ize connect case. We’ve also reviewed Nodus’s Access case as well!

In terms of design, the Nodus Shell case is a polycarbonate case that is wrapped in vegetable tanned Italian leather. The iPhone sits on a microfibre lining and if you look closely enough, you can see where the magnet is. The micro dock that is included with the case is quite small and attaches via a 3M sticky.
We were a little worried about the wear and tear of the case as it spent about a week in a friends pocket filled with keys and coins but according to our fans on Facebook and Instagram, the wear and tear didn’t seem alarming.

When it comes to protection, the Nodus Shell case isn’t drop-rated, and there are no edges on top and bottom of the iPhone. This results in a slightly higher chance that the iPhone might be damaged from a drop at that angle. The edges on the side of the case aren’t quite high enough for glass screen protectors but will work with thinner screen protectors. The case fits tightly together so dust and debris shouldn’t be an issue.

When it comes to the iPhone’s functionality, getting to the device is easy in the Nodus Access case. Buttons are easy to use, and the ports are wide open. The magnet on the case mounts easily to the micro dock which sticks easily to any surface.
Nodus’s claim regarding the shielded magnet seemed outlandish to us, so we had to see for ourselves (real usage right?). We took a Neodymium magnet and ran it over an iPhone 6 which resulted in the compass heading changing. We did the same thing with the Shell case, and nothing happened. This comparison between the two magnets seemed to confirm Nodus’s claim.
We did do the same test with the iPhone 6s, and nothing happened on those devices with either magnet so Apple must have done a better job of shielding the newer 6s. Now is this quirk important? Very much so if you use the compass but how about other location-based features? We’re not sure. If you know, please leave a comment below!
