Ghostek NRG Bag Review – Power-up your backpack with a battery? Does it actually work?
The Ghostek NRG bag is a slightly different take on a regular laptop bag as there is a battery built into the backpack. If that isn’t the icing on the top of the cake, the entire design of the bag is quite smart.
We weren’t completely sold on the idea of a battery backpack but we’ve seen enough battery banks at coffee shops to know that spare power is going to be useful.
For our Ghostek NRG Bag Review, we’re giving this product two thumbs up. This is a great upgrade from your standard laptop bag, is a must for a mobile worker but it might not be as practical for certain students and it has a posture problem. We’ll elaborate in a bit.
Design – A smaller bag but designed very well
The NRG bag looks smaller than your average bag but don’t look that fool you. There are essentially two compartments with the front compartment being used for all your gadgets, Chargers and whatever else you use at an office. The battery pack sits in the very front pocket and can be zippered off.
Our one gripe with the front compartment is the lack of pockets. The two pockets in the front compartment don’t lend itself to easily organize pens, Advil, business cards, cables and other office related doohickeys. Especially when compared to other laptop bags that we’ve used from Booq.
The second compartment is cleverly hidden behind the straps. When we first opened the bag, we thought it was way too small until we found the laptop/tablet compartment. The laptop compartment easily holds a 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina and an iPad with a bit of extra room for a notebook.
Now earlier in the video, we mentioned that the bag had a “posture problem” which is the only way we could describe the fact that the bag doesn’t sit up straight. It’s hard to prop it up so it ends sprawled out on the floor so it ends up getting in the way.

Protection – Take a walk in the rain?
The cleverly designed cover over the laptop compartment is one of our favourite things about the NRG bag because it allows us to get to our larger devices quickly while offering more protection from water than other laptop backpacks. Ghostek says that the NRG bag is water resistant but the flap over the laptop compartment ADDS to that water resistance to ensure that your devices are going to be that much more protected than other laptop bags.

Functionality – Go ahead, leave your power cables at home!
The battery in the Ghostek NRG Bag has a charge of 7000 mah which is enough to charge an iPhone a few times so the bag isn’t necessarily something you’ll need to plugin every night. We’ve charged most of our Android devices with the battery as well as Apple products and from our understanding, it produces the same output as an 2.1 Amp charger but despite that, won’t result in a “fast charge” that you’d expect from a Samsung charger (if you’re using a Samsung phone).
The bag that you’re seeing in this video is a first version so all the cables are attached permanently to the battery. We’ve been told that production models come with female connectors which simplifies everything for you. The external USB connection allows you to easily use the batter without having to open the bag up.
Charging the backpack is simple as all you have to do is plug the bag into the water resistant socket and checking the battery level is as simple as pressing the button on the front.
